Chiara Marchiori

IBM Zurich Research Laboratory
Research Scientist & Scientific Project Lead
Switzerland
Dr. Chiara Marchiori currently supports Matthias Kaiserswerth, director of IBM Research-Zurich, as his technical assistant. In parallel she conducts scientific research, writes and coordinates governmental and joint projects in the Advanced Functional Materials group.

At IBM Research-Zurich, she leads the development of gate stacks suited for metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors based on high-mobility channels (III-V compound semiconductors) to complement silicon in high-performance, low-power logic applications. The integration onto the silicon CMOS platform of III-V-based devices offers improved performance in terms of both functionality and power, and has the potential to enable the traditional silicon scaling roadmap beyond the 10-nm node.

Chiara is also coordinating research on the integration of functional oxides onto standard silicon electronic and nanophotonic platforms to enable novel analogue and digital applications, which will address the transition from More-Moore to More-than-Moore technology trends. To exploit the full potential of crystalline oxides and their broad range of properties (piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, electro-optical activity), she is engaged in a multidisciplinary effort that spans from physics and chemistry to nanofabrication and integration processing.

Chiara Marchiori is also active in the design and development of advanced materials characterization techniques. She is in particular an expert in the use of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) performed with laboratory equipment and synchrotron facilities for composition, band bending, angle resolved and surface photo-voltage experiments.

She joined IBM in 2002 and received a PhD in Materials Science for her work on high dielectric constant oxides (high-κ) for Si CMOS technology in 2005. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Physical Chemistry and a Master's degree in "Materials for communication and energy storage technologies" from the European School for Advanced Studies at the University of Pavia. She has been a research staff member since 2007.
